Why do we need Antioxidants?

To combat free radicals

In biological systems, the normal processes of oxidation (plus a minor contribution from ionizing radiation) produce highly reactive free radicals. These can readily react with and damage other molecules. In some cases the body uses free radicals to destroy foreign or unwanted objects, such as in an infection. However, in the wrong place, the body's own cells may become damaged. Should the damage occur to DNA, the result could be cancer. Antioxidants decrease the damage done to cells by reducing oxidants before they can damage the cell.

Best teas to jump-start your 'teatox' program

Looking to lose weight? Forget the detox, try a "teatox."

A teatox is simple. Dieters simply drink several cups of herbal tea during the day, in addition to eating food. The idea is that drinking warm tea will help keep you full between meals and keep snacking at bay.

But does it work?

"Detoxing with tea may well produce initial, albeit temporary weight loss," said Tanya Zuckerbrot, a registered dietitian and founder of the F-Factor Diet, her clinical practice in New York City that provides nutritional counseling. "Similar to any liquid diet, a tea detox or teatox works by restricting calories so that you consume fewer calories than you burn in a day."

Researchers from Harvard Medical School in Boston and Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam in the Netherlands analyzed health and dietary information on 5,395 people aged 55 and older who were part of the long-term Rotterdam Study of medical conditions and other factors in older adults.

Antioxidants May Improve Male Fertility

NEW YORK Couples who struggle to conceive could find baby-making help from antioxidants such as vitamin E and zinc, hints a new review of more than 30 studies.
